Welcome to is concerned with the findings from the Survey of English Dialects (SED), which was carried out in the 1950s and 1960s throughout England. This web page aims at collecting information and ressources on the SED and it allows users to generate and download dialect maps by uploading simple text files.


While computers are still not very good at understanding real language data, they excel at doing repetitive tasks. Drawing a dialect map is in many respects such a repetitive task: Once the computer gets data in a way it can deal with it, it produces maps much faster and with fewer mistakes than any human being could.
